In December 1989, faculty and students at the University of California, Irvine in Irvine, California petition Pi Tau Sigma for a charter. Twelve students and three faculty endorsed the petition. In addition to the endorsement of Professor D. K. Edwards and J. M. McCarthy, the petition included letters of support from Departmental Chairman W. E. Schmitendorf, Executive vice Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien, and Professor G. S. Samuelsen, Director UCI Combustion Laboratory. Professor Edwards and senior, Marie Matthys, worked diligently in getting the petition processed. On May 19, 1990, U.C. Irvine Alpha Beta was officially installed by President, Dr. James Welty, Western Regional Vice President Dr. Walter Yuen, and National Secretary Treasurer, Dr. Edwin Griggs. Thirteen students were initiated as charter members and Prof. Papamoschou was initiated as an honorary member. The chapter plans to cooperate with other societies in celebrating engineer's week, involvement with the student council in promoting engineering and science to high school students. Another key goal is to have greater interaction with the faculty through faculty-student dinners and other activities.
